Kyu Shiba Rikyu Onshi Teien

Kyū Shiba Rikyū Garden or "Former Shiba Villa Garden" is a classic Japanese landscape garden in central Tokyo.

The land on which the garden is located was originally under the shallows of Edo Bay, but from 1655 to 1658, this area was reclaimed and in 1678, came to be used for the official residence of Okubo Tadatomo, an official of the ruling Tokugawa Shogunate. Okubo built his samurai style residence, he brought garden designers from his clan fief in the Odawara area to Edo to build the garden that became known as "Rakujuen." The owners changed again and again over the time and finally it was purchased by the imperial household and became the Shiba Detached Imperial Villa in 1875.

All buildings were destroyed in the Great Kanto Earthquake of 1923.  In January 1924, the site was donated to Tokyo City, the garden was rebuilt and opened to the public on April 20, 1924.

Kyu Shiba-rikyu Gardens is one of Tokyo’s most famous remaining feudal lord’s gardens from the early part of the Edo period. It is a typical Japanese garden with a pond surrounded by a path, and the placement of the rocks and park boundaries centered around the pond is superb.

The central feature of this garden is the pond (approximately 9,000m2). In former times, seawater was brought in to fill it, but it is now a freshwater pond. There are two small islands in the pond, Nakajima and Ukishima, which symbolize the ocean and lakes. There is also a sandy beach-like area (Suhama) in one corner of the pond.
